If you want to take the Basic RiderCourse (BRC), all you need now is just a valid NJ Driver License. You no longer need a motorcycle permit to take the course. However, if you intend to ride a motorcycle on the street before taking the BRC, you still need to get a valid motorcycle permit (take the NJ MVC motorcycle written test and eye test). If a police officer pulls you over, you need to show a valid motorcycle permit. (You are not allowed to ride a motorcycle outside the State of NJ on a NJ motorcycle permit).
As of 1/28/11, anyone under the age of 18 must take a beginner motorcycle safety course approved by the State of NJ in order to get a motorcycle license/endorsement. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Basic RiderCourse (BRC) is the beginner motorcycle safety course approved by the State of NJ.
If you decide to drop out of the Basic RiderCourse (BRC) during the first day of the practice riding exercises, $100 of the course fee will be refunded to you. We are the only NJ Motorcycle Provider that offers this unique refund policy. If riding a motorcycle is not for you, we don't want you to lose all your money. Other Providers will not refund any of your money.
If you don't pass the BRC Skills Evaluation (which you need to do in order to get your motorcycle endorsement/license), you can retest 3 ways at The Riding Academy of NJ;
- If you take the BRC with us, you can retake the entire Skills Evaluation with us for free. (Other providers charge a fee for a retest or don't offer a retest).
- If you need additional practice, you can take the Additional Practice Riding Course (ABRC) and retest after the course.
- If you didn't pass the course with another Provider, you can take the Additional Practice Riding Course (ABRC) with us and retest after the course or retake the entire BRC with us at a discounted rate of $200.
Standby for Basic RiderCourse (BRC) classes: If a BRC class you want to get into is full, you can try getting into that class as a Standby. Come to the classroom, which is located on the 2nd floor inside the Big Boyz Toy Box building at 2 Shady St in the renowned & historic Bunker Hill section of Paterson, on the first night of the class by 5:30 PM if you want to get into the "A" or "D3" class, or on the first morning of the class by 7:30 AM if you want to get into the "B" or "D2" class. If we have a no-show for that class, you can get in the class. You will need to bring your valid NJ Driver License (or valid NJ motorcycle permit if you don't have a valid NJ Driver License) and payment with you.
Military Service Men and Women: Active personnel can take the MSF courses for free at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in Lakehurst, NJ. Call (732) 323-2525 for details. If you are a NJ resident and took the Basic RiderCourse (BRC) at a military installation within the past 180 days, you can get the NJ MVC road test waiver by going to any NJ MVC Testing Center with your BRC Completion Card and military documents.
